Master Fiddlers offer free concert at Folklife Center

On Monday, November 26, at 7 p.m., The Frank and Jane WV Folklife Center will be hosting an old-time fiddling performance by Doug Van Gundy, a master-fiddler and an eighth-generation West Virginian, and Annie Stroud, his apprentice. The event is free and open to the public.

During the month of November, the Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts and the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folk Life Center will be commemorating the 50thanniversary of the 1968 Farmington Mine Disaster. This event had a devastating effect on Marion County and the surrounding area, but it also brought about changes in mine safety. 

Square Dance and Cakewalk--Nov. 15

As part of the Introduction to Folk Music class taught by Lynette Swiger, a square dance and cakewalk will be held on November 15, 2018 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in the Great Room of Cultures at the Frank and Jane Gabor WV Folklife Center on the campus of Fairmont State University. The dance is free and open to the public and has become an annual event that is enjoyed by old and young alike. Anyone is welcome and encouraged to attend in order to experience an old-time dance event.

Great Migration of African Americans to the coal fields of WV

The Diversity in Appalachia Lecture Series continues at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center on the campus of Fairmont State University with a presentation on the “Great Migration of African Americans to the coal fields of West Virginia.”  Between 1870 and 1930 African Americans left the Deep South to seek better economic and educational opportunities and to escape Jim Crow laws that denied them voting rights. The speakers are Dr. Connie Rice and Ms. Ilene Evans.
